Cheap Laptops and More

I wanna buy a laptop that I’ll be using for college, but do i really need to spend close to $2000 on an Apple laptop? I mean are there any laptops out there that are just as good as the Macbook Pro?

I would like to purchase an Apple Laptop and I was just wondering if Apple also follows the tradition of the friday after thanksgiving sale. If so, should I go to their Apple locations, or any store that sells them? Thanks.
