Cheap Laptops and More

Have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that needs a hard drive and memory. Someone has a hard drive (with the windows os on it) from a Dell laptop they said they would sell to me. A pc tech said they would not recommend that. Has anyone done the same, or - knowledgeable in this field?
