How do I transfer files from a ipod to a dell laptop if it is already formatted to a MAC?

how do I put my wife's music files from her mac/ipod to my dell laptop. It keeps telling me the the the device needs to be reformatted to windows. If I reformat to windows will she loose all the music she has acquired?
