Can I install a copy of Windows from a dead Gateway laptop on a different PC?

I bought a Gateway laptop about 5 years ago that came with a copy of Windows XP. That laptop is dead and so that copy of Windows is no longer in use.

How come Everytime i shut down the lid on my hp laptop, it crashes and restarts the computer?

I Don’t know how to fix it on my hp laptop (vista) it said something with BIOS or something. Well i need someone to point out the exact steps to do it. for example Start>Control Pannel> ext.
