plenty of laptops are as good.
The reliability depends on how you treat the laptop

Yes. Dells and Alianwares are good and a bit faster for the price. Don’t buy a MAC save your money for Ink and Paper :P
For COLLAGE you need only Word Processing and Multimedia Features like music and videos.

You can get a laptop with those requirments for 700-1400$ depending on your configuration.

    Get at least

1.6 Ghz Core2 Duo not Celeron or Pentium
    100 GB 5200rpm Hard Drive
    1 GB ram for XP
    2 Gb ram for Vista
32-128 MB Video Card (Nivida or ATi)
    15.4 inch screen.

Unless you need the larger screen and the better graphics, just get a MacBook. The mid-level one is about $1200 with a student discount. You get a larger hard drive, 2 GB of ram, a Superdrive, and all the rest (iLife 08, etc.). The battery lasts a long time, the tech support is top notch, and the computer works well (built in wifi & webcam).

well if you want something as good as a Macbook Pro, you will not be able to find it–sorry. Apple makes the best laptops out there hands down. You might want to think about getting a regular Macbook however if you are in a price range. They are still Apple so they are good but they are not as expensive as their Pro counterpart.

I think they are the best laptop I’ve ever used (and I’ve had a LOT). I am an IT Mgr and have dozens of ThinkPads and other brands but I carry a MBP and everyone that sees it in action immediately asks when the can trade theirs in for a MAC.

IBM is even recognizing Apple’s goodness by trying to come out with their own version of the AIR. Check out the link below to see their prices!

However, for students, I usually recommend a tablet PC like the Thinkpad X41 series or similar. They are great for carrying around and a tablet PC with MS OneNote is awesome for students.

The MacBook is a great student laptop - for general use no other PC laptop comes close.

They run Windows too - so you can have any PC apps if you need them.

    All Macs come with iLife

and a demo version of iWork08

To get any computer up to the level of a Macbook Pro would be to use additional options which could cost up to 1000$ more than baseline Macbook Pro. They are currently using 2.5 ghz intel processors with optional 256 mb graphics card. Performance is awesome even with these seemingly slow details. Macs just work anyway.
